Renowned Energy Justice Scholar Dr. Tony G. Reames to Speak at RECESS24

Dr. Tony G. Reames is a renowned energy and environmental justice scholar and policy advisor.

Dr. Reames recently served as the Principal Deputy Director for State and Community Energy Programs and Deputy Director for Energy Justice at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In this capacity, he led the establishment of the DOE’s first-ever Office of Energy Justice Policy and Analysis, playing a crucial role in implementing President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative. Under his leadership, $16 billion was deployed to support energy efficiency and clean energy planning, benefiting frontline communities and marginalized groups disproportionately affected by the climate crisis.


Currently, Dr. Reames is an associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), where he directs the SEAS Detroit Sustainability Clinic. He is also the Tishman Professor of Environmental Justice and has established the Urban Energy Justice Lab and the Energy Equity Project, focusing on the persistent inequalities in energy generation, consumption, and affordability.


Dr. Reames’ distinguished career includes service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of Captain, and work in both the private and public sectors as a licensed professional engineer. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University, a Master of Engineering Management from Kansas State University, and a Ph.D. in Public Administration from the University of Kansas.
